About the new regime

Taxpayers without business or professional income can choose the old regime directly in the ITR if it produces lower tax. Taxpayers with business or professional income must file Form 10-IEA within the section 139(1) due date and should account for the opt-out/re-entry limits.

Zero tax up to ₹12.75 lakh for salaried. Taxable income up to ₹12,00,000 qualifies for full rebate u/s 87A. Adding the ₹75,000 standard deduction, a salaried taxpayer pays no tax on gross salary up to ₹12,75,000.

Above ₹12 lakh, marginal relief ensures tax cannot exceed the income above the rebate threshold. For example, at ₹12,10,000 taxable income, tax is capped at ₹10,000 rather than the full slab-computed amount.

New regime does not permit Chapter VI-A deductions like 80C, 80D, HRA or home loan interest on self-occupied property. Employer NPS contribution u/s 80CCD(2) is allowed.
